The Magical Apprentice gets a Pet!

Who: Koakuma, Patchouli Knowledge, Taro Kuroyoko
Where: Scarlet Devil Mansion, Voile Library
What: Taro's Mistress decides that it's time for him to tae on a new challenge.
Watch For: Lengthy summoning sequence, sudden hostile encounter!
    It's evening outside the Mansion, the steady tick tock of the massive clock on the roof of the mansion one of the few noises in Voile Library.  A raging fire is in the chimney and a few chairs set close by to feel the radiant warmth of the fire, a table with a few books upon it and a glass of tea and a particular magician on one of the chairs with two books floating in front of her.  She lets out a light sigh and takes a bit of a look around before focusing back upon her book.  "Fetch the apprentice."  she mutters to seemingly no one, a light frown upon her face, "And get more tea."
    ====================
    The steady sound of the clock was what could guide one in the Library. A tempo which helped regulate everything in the usually silent library.  And in an aisle set near the fireplace stood Koakuma, her hands moving over the shelves as she perked a headwing before looking to her Mistress, "Yes Mistress. I'll send him as I get more of the tea."  She said as she kicked off the ground softly, her wings flapping a few times to send her airborne.  She flew over the shelves as she looked side to side for Taro.  Past a group of Fairies taking a break on the shelves (who may be reprimanded later) and towards the area of the Library where she figured the human would be in.
    ====================
    By the time Koakuma had arrived, Taro was currently doing some self-study in an isle, seated at one of those numerous desks scattered about while flipping through a book and taking notes. After all, the theory wants to be learned as well when he wanted to improve! Though something seemed to distract Taro a little, as he believed he hear a faint pair of wings beating in the air, making the human look up, adjusting his glasses as he tried to see who was there, or if he was imagining it.
    Be it coincidence or intuition, the young human manages to spy the library's devil. "Oh, Koakuma! Are you looking for something?"
    ====================
    The devil looked to the human as she landed, "Actually Taro, I am looking for you. Mistress is wishing to speak with you near the fireplace." Kokauma said as she looked over him.  "While you talk with her I will be going to get more tea, so don't wait for me.  Don't keep her waiting."  Her crimson eyes looked upon the book as she nodded slightly. At least he seems to be in a better state overall than the last time she had visited him in his area of the library.
    ====================
    The young man would blink as Koakuma spoke. "Oh, is that so? Please give me a second...", Taro would respond, briefly looking down as he scribbled down another note with the quill hastily, before considering his work paused and looking at Koakuma again, nodding. "Just had to finish this here... I will get going, then, and understood." Taro did wonder what Patchouli might want to talk to him about personally as he got to his feet and took off, dashing towards the fireplace with haste! Better not keep her waiting.
    Soon enough, the budding magician would be setting down near the group of chairs, his Mistress on one of them, taking the last steps approaching Patchouli. "I am here, Mistress. What can I do for you?", Taro asked, curiously glancing at the witch, though he was trying to not stare too intently. He's still worried sometimes about rubbing someone the wrong way, though he did improve a lot ever since he started here.
    ====================
    The magician's books shut abruptly, floating to the stack upon the table.  Thankfully, it didn't take that long for the boy to get to her.  "Sit."  she mutters, taking a look to the right to face the boy.  "You've been progressing quite well according to Koakuma.  I feel as if you're ready to have some actual responsibility around the Mansion and the library."  a pause, closing her eyes a moment as she takes a sip of what's left from her teacup.  "I've had Sakuya clean out a room here in the Library.  There's a few shelves and tomes in there for you to study along with a proper bed and a cabinet for your clothes.  I've also taken the means to get you a desk and chair to study."  she pauses a moment, opening her eyes again, "I've taken the liberty to ward the room as well against intrusions from fairies and...  from stray magic from you.  However, this isn't the responsibility that I'm going to give you..."
    ====================
    At this word Taro would follow, quickly taking a seat in the chair right next to the girl, before getting quiet, listening intently to what Patchouli had to say. At first he was just nodding a little, not helping but letting a little smile show as it seemed that Koakuma had praised his progress in his absence. It was a nice feeling, knowing that what he was doing was worth the work at least. Seeing Patchouli pause though, made Taro grow a little tense. It felt like a little tease, but thankfully the girl wouldn't keep him in suspense for too long, and what she eventually told him, was a big surprise for the young man, his eyes widening a little in shock. "R-Really, Mistress? I... I am grateful to you to hear that... I am really glad you think of me this way by now."
    The human felt a bow was appropriate, though seated in the chair it would be a little awkward, so he just ended up bowing his head in gratitude towards the witch. "Even though I didn't mind it, having lived like this for so long now, I am really thankful that you are deeming me worthy enough to have my own room. Ahh, I should thank Sakuya as well...", Taro would murmur the last part a little to himself, before freezing for a moment, blinking at Patchouli in wonder. "O-Oh? What else did you have in mind, Mistress?" This was quite a big shock for Taro already, who had sort of gotten accustomed to being woken by the occasional fairy activity at night. This was a very welcome change!
    ====================
    The Devil continued to fly towards the pair as she returned with tray of tea and a few additional cups as she continued towards the pair.  This was well trained action as she flew without spilling a drop as she landed and walked the last bit to them as she looked to Mistress as she knew what was being likely being discussed before she heard the last bits of the talk as she set the tray down.  "Mistress, Taro." Koakuma as she set the cups down and filled them with tea.
    ====================
    "Thank you, Koakuma."  Patchouli smiles before reaching behind her, pulling out a few scraps of paper.  "This is a summoning spell for a low class servant."  she gives Taro a stern look, "Summoning spells are very peculiar and require the utmost patience, energy and precise chanting.  I believe you can do it, but be warned, if you do not do this spell properly, you won't be able to summon a servant and the papers will burn.  All the instructions on how to set it up is on the first page."  a pause, "A simple kedama will probably do you nicely for minor work... and to prove your responsibility."
    ====================
    The human would note Koakuma's arrival with a little nod, smiling gratefully as she came with the promised tea, though the young man would remain quiet, wanting to let Patchouli finish with whatever else she wanted to tell him. As he heard what these scraps of paper were, Taro would blink. "A... servant? You mean, like Koakuma is your servant?" Then it suddenly struck him, and his master's explanation confirmed it. "You mean... You think I am ready for one already? I-I feel honored... I admittedly wasn't expecting to be doing this well so soon, to be honest, but..." Taro would go quiet for a moment, staring at the filled teacups. "If you believe that I can do it, I am willing to give it a try."
    Even if on first impulse a kedama sounded like something fairly unexciting, Taro did like the idea of having something akin to a pet... he never had one in the outside world, though he used to feed the neighbor's cats sometimes when he was a kid. Before he delved into spontaneous nostalgia though, Taro decided to clear his mind, focusing on what was ahead. "When do you want me to try it?", Taro glanced at Patchouli, trying to keep a stern expression though there was a hint of childish excitement, excitement to learn another new thing of this fantastic, yet strange world he's living in.
    ====================
    The devil looked to the human as she landed, "Actually Taro, I am looking for you. Mistress is wishing to speak with you near the fireplace." Kokauma said as she looked over the pair as she seemed to be a little tense.  She knew the dangers of magical mistakes with precision but knew Mistress had something set to protect this.  "Taro you know what a Kedama is right?"  She asked as he seemed overly excited and as if it was a case where he might be thinking he was getting something a bit more impressive than a fluffball.  She had a spell readied in case Taro managed to something unexpected... Of course the entire Werewolf encounter was enough to have her a little bit on edge.
    ====================
       Patchouli thinks a moment, giving a slight nod.  "Why don't you give the summoning a try now.  Show me what you've learned." she nods, looking at Koakuma with a gaze of 'be ready'.  "This Kedama won't be of much threat, but if a mispronunciation happens, it could be more than a kedama..." a pause, "And we don't need you summoning anything stronger than it.
       Patchouli's eyes close a bit, taking a sip of the tea before she opens them and looks at Taro with an expectant gaze, "We'll be here if it fails or you do something unexpected."
    ====================
    This particular tension Taro seemed to be filled with would be quite apparent on the human, about to make a new experience with something he yet hadn't done, or even really thought of before! But now that this chance was presented to him like this, naturally he couldn't decline such an offer... there was no way he wanted to see Patchouli's and Koakuma's disappointed faces should he chicken out now. Besides, what could go wrong? With these two around, Taro was almost certain that nothing bad could happen, and that Patchouli knew better than most what he was capable with.
    "Oh? Ahh, kedama... They are strange. I have seen them a few times, although rarely. They get aggressive sometimes, too, but... They are not much stronger than fairies are, right?" The human seemed to be at least confident in his own strength when it came to what he could deal with, and kedama seemed just a level under the average fairy. After answering Koakuma, Taro would face his Mistress again, and he would give a decisive nod.
    "Right now? I see..." The young man would lean forward and accept the papers Patchouli produced, before looking over the first page, keeping what Mistress said in mind. After looking over the instructions, flying very briefly over them one more time before giving a confident nod, the apprentice would look up at Patchouli again, nodding in understanding.
    "Right... I suppose this serves as another test as well, hmm?" Taro's expression was stern, yet he still couldn't completely contain his excitement, there was a certain fire in his eyes! "I will try to make it so that no intervention won't be necessary. I believe I can read this script..." Then, the human would finally get to his feet, deciding that it was probably a better stance to do this kind of magic... taking a few deep breaths as he calms himself. His eyes were closed for a brief moment as he relaxed, before opening again and staring down onto the papers before he began chanting what was inscribed. His voice made it apparent that he was excited, but the young magician tried his best to not rush this process, putting effort into how he pronunciations every single word, taking his time as he went on...
    ====================
    The Devil continued to watch this and brace herself as Koakuma knew the dangers of this especially since it looked like Taro had forgotten to do a summoning circle.  A quick glance to her Mistress with  her eyes as she kept focused on the area infront of Taro as he continued to run through the spell as she knew that Mistress and her could defeat anything which came out which was of active danger but best to be ready.  Her wings twitched and shifted behind her as she readied herself to take to the skies to battle if he managed to summon something actually dangerous.   But of course she stood in silence to not distract Taro from his task.
    ====================
        Patchouli takes another sip of her tea, a steeled gaze upon her human servant.  "Pronunciation is key." she reiterates, listening to the boy and his chanting.  "Koakuma, more tea please." as Patchouli holds the cup towards her devil servant.  "Keep in mind, this shouldn't bring up anything more than a kedama, we'll be here if he does mispronounce and summon something else.." she turns her gaze back to Taro, watching intently.
    ====================
    The young man was pretty tense, and he was quite thankful the two watching him were not talking too much, allowing him to focus his mind on this one task. Would forgetting the summoning circle be much of a problem? His Mistress herself did not seem to be too on edge, or so Taro thought, catching sight of her only briefly when he glanced sideways, until refocusing on the chanting once more. So far it seemed to proceed nicely, Taro felt... but how would he know his chanting did achieve something? How would the summoned creature appear? Gradually fading into existence or would it just pop up? He hadn't quite thought about that yet, but this made him even more curious!
    ====================
    With her Mistress's order, Koakuma quickly but silently moved to get her Mistress more tea. Nothing to interrupt Taro's actions or distract him but it was a case where she was balancing decades of practice moving silently and collecting her Mistress's supplies during experiences were put on full display here as soon she would have tea for her Mistress and was filling her cup.  The boy seemed to be working on the spell and every word he spoke seemed to be accurate compared to the planned spell and a number of points of failure were passed as he continued to work.
    ====================
        Patchouli gives a nod of acceptance towards Koakuma with her swift actions, taking another sip of the now filled tea glass.  She closes her eyes, focusing upon the boy's chanting... the way his breath sounds, the vocalizations, the pronunciations.  It almost sounded like a practiced magician... almost.   A small shimmer starts forming on the ground in the middle of a now formed spell circle, Patchouli's eyes opening to look at it with a stoic look, showing neither happiness or sadness upon it.  A finger is lifted towards Koakuma, a couple of approving nods and she goes back to sipping her tea again.
    ====================
    There was a tiny glint that Taro may have as well missed... until it started to become stronger! Taro's eyes would widen slightly as he started seeing something forming right before him, some kind of light! Was this his doing? Why would either Koakuma or Patchouli do this, of course it was him who did this! Taro had to force himself to stay calm and not get too excited though, he did not want to stop until he knew he was done!
    ====================
    Koakuma paused and looked to the direction her Mistress was pointing and narrowed her eyes at the spellcircle formed and the runes around it as she quickly began to work to figure out their meaning only to notice the point of light within it as it started to grow and expand out.  It definitely looked like something was coming through the summoning but with each word sounding right it looked as if Taro was getting closer to the climax of the ritual.  Needless to say Koakuma was on guard until the ritual would reach it's climax.
    ====================
    It was going well... very well indeed! Taro felt more and more excited at this process, as his voice appeared to attain a certain tone of excitement, yet his chants were still accurate enough to not cancel out the summoning process, or possibly summon something different than intended!
    It would take a little longer but eventually this little light would appear to enlargen just a tiny bit more, and eventually it would start to take shape! Taro's eyes widened more as he eventually saw the light dying down... instead leaving a form behind which looked just like the thing that he was intended to summon! There was an orange, fuzzy, ball-shaped creature that was sitting on the floor... though it did not quite seem to move. Was it asleep? Taro wouldn't dare making a move just yet, but as he assumed the summoning itself was successfully concluded, he shot a checking glance at both Koakuma and Patchouli, unsure whether this was already it, and whether it was okay to relax now! On the inside Taro was already celebrating!
    ====================
    With the light dying down Koakuma could make out the shape of what was summoned.  Her crimson eyes narrowed as her wings folded down behind her and her guard lowered. It defintely was a Kedama within the circle and Koakuma gave her Mistress a glance as she knew this wasn't completely done but it looked like Taro hadn't summoned something a bit more deadly.  Which in itself would be a feat as it would tell that they had a lot more magical power than he let on. A silent nod was given to Her Mistress as if giving her approval to what she saw.
    ====================
    Patchouli gives an approving nod, looking at the newly summoned Kedama with a curious glance.  "Taro, finish the spell." she muttered "It's not completely formed.  Just a few more words and it should start activity and respond to your commands." she states, giving a brief smile at the summoning.  She turns to Koakuma, giving a nod.  She gives a light whisper towards Koakuma, her face going back to the unimpressed librarian look.
    ====================
    Taro felt a wave of happiness wash over himself as he received final instructions from his Mistress. Was there a praising tone in Patchouli's words? Maybe Taro was imagining it, but he was pretty damn satisfied with himself now, seeming to almost having done it! While it was unknown whether he could have summoned something worse on accident... it was probably best for now that Taro kept to the manual, anything else may have become a bother, even if short-lived. The young man would resume chanting the last lines, the magic circle still intact and as soon as he finished, the circle would disappear and... the ball gave a sudden twitch! And then it jumped, its eyes wide and open! It was evidently shocked to find itself in a new environment!
    ====================
    A slight shiver ran down the Devil's spine as Kokuma seemed to take a deep breath in as if she was oddly distracted for a moment, her wings drooping and vision growing distant.  But as soon as this happened the red haired devil's vision snapped into focus once more.  She took anoher deep breath as she looked to the creature floating there and looking at Taro.  While the Devil herself wasn't a summoner she knew just what would come next.  The Most important step for summoning a being...
    ====================
    The magician gives a light smirk.  "If you studied..."  she watches the Kedama curiously, looking at Koakuma with a nod.. "summoning something requires you to take it from its native environment... and make it submit to you."  The kedama takes a look towards Taro, puffs up and turns a reddish color before launching itself at the summoner.  "Go on, make it yours.  You'll have to fight it... and live... in order for you to keep it."
    ====================
    The human had stared back at the summoned kedama for now, but as soon as it seemed to become angry, Taro would take a nervous step backwards, somewhat defensively. Did this small thing really want to fight him? Then again, this was not just some mere animal as he knows them, this one was more of a magical beast! "R-Right... sure, I got this!", Taro would agree, his voice seeming a little wavering. He was so excited about the summon he managed to forget about what came right afterwards! But it was not like Taro was unprepared, after all he had been learning under a master of these elements!
    As the kedama suddenly jumped at Taro, the human would jump aside, before conjuring a flame right away, into a fireball, before lobbing it at the fuzzy beast! "T-That shouldn't be too difficult, right? It's pretty small!"
    ====================
    And thus it begins.  Taro having not set up a preparatory set of wards will make this phase of the summoning a little more difficult.  A proper set of wardings would only have the summoned creature trapped within the bounds of it making the taming much easier.  But with this thing he was safe... or he should be safe. Failing this part would be a massive black mark against him for his training and thus be a mark against herself.  "You should be able to do this Taro. Remember your training."
    ====================
    This human was indeed in for something! While he was a little bit on a disadvantage thanks to not having made the right preparations for this, he still had all sorts of magics in his repertoire! Dodging that fuzzball was easy, but how durable would it be? Getting hit by the fireball would make it seem to halt, stunning it for but a brief moment - before it charged at Taro again! The human decided to take flight for better movement options! And this may allow him to get a better shot at his opponent.
    Channeling his magical energy, Taro would decide to settle with wood magic for his next attempt at nailing this little beast down. Several danmaku leaves would be conjured before being sent towards the summoned kedama, Taro hoping on this having a greater effect than fire!
    Where did he get these simple attack patterns from? In part they were the results of practice, combined with him remembering some manga he used to read!
    ====================
    The Kedama continues to try and attack Taro, trying to ram its soft fluffy body into the boy until Taro takes flight.  Its eyes widen as the leaf-styled danmaku starts coming at it, pinning it to the ground!  It doesn't take too long before the red coloring fades to a blue, submissive look.   "Hmm.  This was too easy." Patchouli muttered, shaking her head, "Either way, well done.  You've acquired a kedama."
    ====================
    This... was it already? The young man appeared to be quite surprised as this thing went down after just two attacks... without even knowing its weakspots! But maybe that's why they were apparently a popular target for low-level summons?
    The human set down to the ground again, before approaching the kedama a little... seeing that now it seemed pretty harmless. Was it safe to pick it up now? One more checking glance was given at the two who have been watching him... and the human's surprised expression would turn into a smile, actually, even a grin! "T-Thanks! I am really glad it somehow worked out... This much excitement I haven't felt in a while now..." The human would then crouch down to carefully pick the blue fluffball up.
    ====================
    With the brief battle completed Koakuma looked to her Mistress before giving Taro a soft clap or two, "It does look to be a solid victory for Taro."  She nodded, "But it looks like it is yours Taro. I believe that it would need a name." Her wings shifted and twitched a few times as she spoke.  "If anything you'll slowly get used to such things." Of course Koakuma could probably have done the same ritual long ago but for some reason it looked like the Devil never partook of such things.
    ====================
    The magician's eyes fall upon the kedama and the boy, "Koakuma is right, you need to name it to claim it as yours and have it follow your commands.  Or what little it can do." she comments, stretching lightly before taking a sip of tea.  "What did you plan on calling it?" she questions, the magician's eyes moving from kedama to apprentice.
    ====================
    Seeing how the kedama did not seem to resist anymore, Taro would now carefully hoist it up and hold it in his arm as he glances over towards the other two. His expression was a happy one, relieved that it had gone this well! However, he seemed to pause for a moment as they asked him for a name... he really hadn't thought of this just yet - he only got done with the summon now, and now came more decisions of substantial importance! "A-Ahh, a name? What would I name this guy?", Taro spoke, thoughtfully looking down at the kedama on his arm as he considered his options. He couldn't think of anything too great in such a short time, but... maybe something simple could work? "How does Shirotama sound, then? I think that would be a fitting name!", Taro then would say with a smile, waiting for their approval.
    ====================
    Koakuma looked to her Mistress and then to Taro and to this now named 'Shirotama' She stroked her chin for a moment, "I believe it may be a good name. Certainly describes the creature."  she said as the little devil moved to circle the summoned fluffball.  "I must say it looks to be in good condition."  Admittedly Koakuma hadn't studied Kedama that much but it seemed that the fluffy thing was calm now.  "I believe if anything the summoning has seemed to have been a success," she said as it loooked like Taro summoned what Mistress desired him to summon.
    ====================
    Patchouli looks back to Koakuma and then the fluffball.  "Shirotama."  an approving nod is given, "It looks to be in good health, no flaws that I can see.  And you summoned it with the right words.  I think... I can allow you to train more then if you can handle summoning."  she turns to Koakuma, "You may increase the training regimine's strength upon Taro.  I believe he to be ready of such.  I will also inform Meiling and Sakuya as well."
    ====================
    Seeing both of them to give their approval for their name - nothing much could go wrong with it, right? - Taro would then return the nod with a smile as he came closer to the two again. "Then this will be this little guys name!" Taro's unoccupied hand would lay to gently rest atop the small fluff, scritching it gently, almost testingly. He had never gotten to close to any kedama before, so this was quite a new thing. Taro did have a little experience with kids when he was a kid, but this was something entirely different and new to him.
    Hearing about how Patchouli considered him to be good enough to take on more difficult trainings now, Taro would grow a little more excited at this prospect. "Really, Mistress? I-I will try my best then from now on as well!"
    ====================
    A pause from the devil as she made the note, "Yes Mistress I will inform the others.  I will try and push his limits then, also I will inform them about Shirotama," The devil's wings twitched a little, "Also would you wish me to inform them of anything else?" Koakuma asked as she looked at the Kedama a bit more.  "But yes Taro, Congratulations."  The Crimson haired devil said as she looked over the boy, "Expect the training to be more difficult very soon. I will not tell you when I have made it more difficult but it will become more difficult."
    ====================
    "That would be all, Koakuma.  Taro, assuming you pass this step, I might be willing to infer more knowledge upon you.  But another question for you to dwell on."  Patchouli looks at Koakuma, then back towards Taro.  "Summoning takes a lot of energy and materials.   What you summoned took very little but I'm sure you noticed some strain.   Are you still content to come down the path of a magician like myself?   It is not easy and you will find that we are a bit reclusive."  or in Patchouli's case, a lot.  "Are you prepared to take accidents and study them over and over to find out what went wrong and how to correct or mitigate for next time?  Are you prepared to deal with accidental spells coming from a mischant?"  another look to Koakuma, "Are you prepared to see what my Koakuma can do to train you better?"
    ====================
    Another question? The young apprentice's eyes would be locked onto the witch now attentively after having thanked the little devil with a bow of his head, the human waiting for what Patchouli had thought up for him. What she did say would not shake him too much though - if anything, he looked a little more stern, but more determined than that as he replied. "I am sure that... this is the kind of thing I want to do, Mistress." The reclusion bit is not something Taro had a problem with - after all, he used to be a social hermit himself, safe for a few exceptions. "I want to improve on what I do, so I expected that it will take a lot of work... if you and Koakuma are willing to help me, I will try my best to not disappoint you."
    ====================
    Koakuma looked to her Mistress and gave a brief bow to her, "Yes Mistress," She said as she looked to Taro once more, "I will inform Miss Sakuya and Miss Meiling of the changes now,"  As look to Taro and his new pet and a slight bow to them as the Devil turned to leave the Library.  Hopefully the new pet wouldn't cause any problems and hopefully the new training wouldn't cause Taro any long term difficulties or injuries.  As Koakuma had high exceptions in him and she knew that her Mistress did as well.
